Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Programs

What is SEL?

SEL sessions focus on preventing bullying, substance use, and suspension or expulsion from school by encouraging healthy self-image, effective communication, and positive relationships. Through activities and discussions, youth develop critical competencies in self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, responsible decision-making, and relationship skills. Programming is guided by best practices outlined by the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL).

Why is SEL important?

As they engage in SEL lessons, students are equipped to succeed at school, at home, in the workplace, and within the community; studies show that SEL positively impacts academic achievement, which is demonstrated by improvements in metrics including grades, test scores, and attendance. As a result of enhanced social and emotional development due to SEL, students are more likely to graduate high school, complete postsecondary education, and achieve secure, full-time employment.

SEL is also an important tool for advancing equity; it promotes collaboration between schools, families, youth, and communities. SEL’s framework helps students and educators alike develop deeper awareness of other cultures, backgrounds, and perspectives to create classroom environments that are inclusive of all learners.

Current In-school Offerings:

CDP’s counselors provide SEL programming to 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders in five elementary schools, including Bellevue, Chimborazo, Fairfield Court, Henry Marsh, and Woodville. CDP also provides SEL programming to 9th graders at Armstrong High School.

Current After-school and Summer Offerings:

Out-of-school sessions represent enriching opportunities to continuously engage in SEL in multiple settings to encourage long-term skill retention. CDP partners with the Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club, the Boys & Girls Club of Metro Richmond, and Peter Paul Development Center to offer interactive SEL group sessions after school.

CDP also hosts Camp Discovery over the summer. This six-week day camp engages two youth groups between the ages of 9 and 17. The camp’s curriculum focuses on SEL and integrates experiential learning through art, music, cooking, fitness, field trips, and outdoor activities.
